Shiva Sankalp: A 10-Minute Morning Ritual That Actually Sticks

Shiva Sankalp: A 10-Minute Morning Ritual That Actually Sticks

For the last 50+ days I’ve been showing up for a simple Shiva practice that keeps me grounded even when life feels loud. Here’s the exact 10-minute version you can do daily-no incense or big setup required.

What is “Sankalp” (in one line)?

A clear inner statement of how you choose to be today. Not a wish – a decision.

Why this works

  • Breath slows the nervous system, which calms mind-noise.
  • Mantra gives the mind one constructive point to hold.
  • One action converts intent into proof you can trust yourself.

The 10-minute Shiva Sankalp

0:00–1:00 Prepare
Sit comfortably. Spine long. One hand on chest, one on belly. Whisper: “I’m safe in this moment.”

1:00–4:00 Breath (4-2-6)
Inhale 4, hold 2, exhale 6. Repeat gently ×6 rounds.

4:00–6:00 Mantra (choose one)

  • शिवोऽहम् — Shivo’ham (I am Shiva—pure awareness).
  • ॐ नमः शिवाय — Om Namah Shivaya (I bow to Shiva).
Chant aloud or mentally with your breath.

6:00–8:00 Sankalp (say it once, clearly)

Use your words if you like. Keep it present tense, positive, specific.

8:00–10:00 One action for today
Write one tiny action that proves your Sankalp (e.g., 15-minute walk after lunch, reply to 1 tough email, 20 minutes of focus on my build). That’s it.

3-minute version (on hectic days)

  • 1 min breath (4-2-6)
  • 1 min mantra
  • 1 min Sankalp + one action

Common roadblocks → tiny fixes

  • Mind keeps racing: Count your exhales up to 10; start again.
  • Missed a day: Don’t “catch up.” Just show up tomorrow.
  • Low motivation: Shrink the action to 2 minutes and begin.

Safety note

This is a personal practice, not medical advice. If you have any condition that affects breathing or mental health, adapt with your physician’s guidance.
